Description The African Population and Health Research Center (APHRC), based in Nairobi, Kenya and the Center for Global Development, based in Washington, D.C., teamed up to address these major data challenges through a new working group—the Data for African Development Working Group— which worked to identify the underlying political economy issues related to the collection, analysis and use of data for policy-making. The APHRC-CGD Data for African Development Working Group is examined two aspects of these major data challenges. Firstly, the group examined the relationship between the institutional arrangements governing national statistics systems as they relate to efficient and timely production of data. Secondly, the Working Group explored issues of data access and provide recommendations for countries, international organizations, and donors that illustrate how new initiatives like Open Data and others can help provide a platform for countries and international organizations to better publish and utilize data.
