Description Open Schools Kenya is about making citizen data, official data, and any other data source about a school easy to combine and compare, to get the best picture of what is happening in education at the moment. Many people collect information about education - and they sometimes make it open and free to use. So, why is it not easy to find information about a particular school - for a parent, or for an education researcher? Much of the information that is out there is nott connected to the other data - and especially when it comes to informal schools, which provide a great deal of the education services in places like informal settlements. The most basic school information -- like school location, fees, class size, or building types -- is unavailable, inaccessible, or out of date. This is especially true in many informal urban settlements, like the Kibera slum in Nairobi, Kenya, where demand for better education data is already well-established. That is where Open Schools Kenya comes in. People can collect information themselves about their communities, and share it openly online. Schools themselves can take ownership of their page, submit changes, and share their page to promote their work. Enabling parents to give feedback on their childrens school, helping to show which schools are performing well, even in the absence of other data like test scores, and helping schools to improve.
